After years of steady technological gains, the past two years have seen an explosion of tech features on mid-sized excavators (20 to 45 metric ton). We asked manufacturers to provide insights on their most recent and significant technologies.

When the cutting-edge grinds against hard surfaces like asphalt or concrete the bucket wears unevenly, which will result in a scallop shape.

Caterpillar’s Pin Grabber Coupler can use some competitive buckets that are like size. “It allows customers to switch back and forth from bucket to bucket in a matter of seconds,” says Ryan Neal. “But one trade-off is the tip radius is increased and breakout force is decreased. Most customers are willing to lose that for the versatility.”

Smart Power Control (SPC) is the feature cited by Aaron Kleingartner, marketing manager, Doosan Infracore North America. SPC was designed during the development of dash-5 Tier 4 Doosan excavators to reduce fuel consumption up to 7 percent. SPC monitors demand, and when demand is low, such as during the swing portion of a dig cycle, SPC lowers engine speed.

Yet, a severe-duty bucket isn’t right for every task. “With the additional guarding on the top, sides and bottom, there is some additional weight compared to the heavy-duty bucket,” says Smith. “There is no need to add weight if it is not needed. You will get more work done by optimizing the attachment at the end of the machine with the material being moved.”

Eterra’s PDX-750 Breaker Style Post Driver works on backhoe loaders, skid steers and excavators and replaces the PD-750 driver. The company says the PDX-750 can drive a 6-inch post into the ground in less than 20 seconds. It delivers more than 750 foot-pounds per blow and can handle large railway ties. The company offers a variety of post guide housings and driver heads for the attachment, as well as a 5-foot breaker spike for hard ground or rock.

“I was impressed with the machine’s power,” said Howard. “The settings—power and power-plus—made the machine easy to handle, and I thought the speed of hydraulic response was very good.”

Playing in the upper stratosphere of the CC reminded me that while extreme upper-fret ranges are sometimes considered a novelty by the uninitiated, they are ripe with musical potential when used judiciously. Of course, to make extra-high fretting work, playability is a must, and I was amazed that the absolute highest note on the guitar rang true and sustained easily. I was even more surprised that I could bend up a step-and-a-half on that note without fretting out. Impressive.

The room, which once housed the critically lauded 42 Grams, retains a simple sophistication. It all tastefully whispers, “This is a serious restaurant.” Sarah Traynor, the savvy beverage director who doubles as a server and is both omnipresent and omniscient, perpetuates that confidence.

“That means they might use a machine 20 to 30 percent of the time on the job and the rest of the time they are using other machines. When you have a coal planer and you can put a sweeper on it or a bucket, then the machine is used more often and multiple applications can be handled by one operator. It makes economic sense,” Vasseur says.

The excavator pallet forks from Dromone Engineering, Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland, distributed in North America by Tag Manufacturing, Chattanooga, Tenn., are available for excavators ranging from 10 to 24 tons and can be fitted to 65mm or 80mm pins. The forks are adjustable and removable.
