Tilting buckets are very versatile and when used in the right application like ditching or finish grading. They are typically used with wide buckets from grading and shaping applications.

“Some buckets have a more protruding heel and a large capacity, but can hit the material while digging, and thus cause drag on the machine and excessive wear on the bucket,” says Horton. “The best buckets are those that have the heel that does not stick outside of the tip radius.”

When asked about any cab features they particularly liked, both operators mentioned what might seem a relatively insignificant item—but obviously important from an experienced operator’s point of view.

– A removable seal washer protects the bearings inside most suspension links. Gently pry this off with a screwdriver to gain access to the bearing. Once the washer is removed, gently push the bearing sleeve out.

“The dedicated style is like the Wain-Roy, the wedge style or the Volvo S3 style coupler where the coupler will only mate to a bucket with a special top connection,” says Lee Horton, Leading Edge Attachments. “The advantage of this method is that the tip radius is usually very small, the weight is relatively low and the buckets can be used with several of the same size class machines fitted with the mating coupler. With this style coupler, because a bucket can be used with many different OEM excavators, it is great for rental houses or larger contractors with multiple machines because they don’t have to worry about matching the bucket to the machine in the same size class.
